Gray Squirrel entry

Gray Squirrels

- Grays are the most destructive of the three squirrel species in CT and RI. Chewing entry points in gable vents, soffets, and facia corners to gain access. Once in the building, they usually go into the attic or wall, where warmth and insulation makes for suitable habitat to nest and raise young.

Grays will also use chimneys, especially dormant chimneys, to nest. Sometimes they will get into a chimney, but due to the smooth tiles, won’t be able to climb out. The result is an animal making clawing, scrambling noises above the damper. If within a few days the animal is not removed, it will die in the chimney.

Red Squirrels

- Though not quite as destructive as the gray squirrel, Reds have an uncanny ability to find the most inaccessible entry points and nesting areas in a building. They thrive in areas where there are a lot of evergreen trees. Although they sometimes use the same areas to access a building as the gray, most often they pick an old home of 150-200 yrs. They gain access at the ground level, through stone foundations and old rotten wood near the sill. They are a challenge to catch, and even more of a challenge to keep out.

Flying Squirrels

- Flyers are the most docile of the three, and in my opinion, the cutest of them all. Nocturnal in nature, they colonize from three to a few dozen animals. They are not so destructive as grays and reds, and tend to use existing entry points when available. They do however use latrines or toilet areas, which is a sign we look for when inspecting for flyers. These latrines will sometimes leak through a ceiling and cause staining, which resembles pine pitch or tar like consistency.
